Breast lift

Over the years, factors such as breastfeeding, pregnancy, and the force of gravity have an effect on the female bust. The skin loses elasticity and the breasts usually lose their shape and firmness and begin to fall. The breast lift, technically called mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to elevate and restore or reshape fallen breasts. At the same time it is possible to decrease the size of the areolas (darker skin around the nipples), decrease or increase the size of your breasts by means of the placement of an implant (for example in the case that your breasts had lost size after breastfeeding).

Considering a breast lift

Over the years, factors such as breastfeeding, pregnancy, and the force of gravity have an effect on the female bust. The skin loses elasticity and the breasts usually lose their shape and firmness and begin to fall. The breast lift, technically called mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to elevate and restore or reshape fallen breasts. At the same time it is possible to decrease the size of the areolas (darker skin around the nipples), decrease or increase the size of your breasts by means of the placement of an implant (for example in the case that your breasts had lost size after breastfeeding).

The best candidates

The best candidates for this surgery are women in good health, emotionally stable, and realistic about what this surgery can do for their appearance, in terms of achieving a better harmony in their body. The best results are usually achieved in women with small and fallen freckles. It is possible to raise breasts of any size, but the results will not be the same in heavy breasts, in which the possibility of a procedure to reduce its volume will have to be evaluated. Many women have access to this surgery because pregnancy and breast-feeding have left their skin stretched and with a decrease in volume. Age is not a contraindication to perform this procedure, so it can be performed when the woman reaches a physical maturity. In this surgery the ability to breastfeed will not be affected, but it would be convenient to postpone this surgery in case you think you have more children, since hormonal factors during pregnancy, and lactation will produce changes in your breasts and may reduce the result of this procedure.

Planning your surgery

In the initial consultation, it is important that you state your expectations. Each person has a different opinion about the size and ideal shape that the breast should have. We will evaluate your state of health, examine and measure your bust and explain what surgical technique is most appropriate for you, based on the condition of your breast and the tone of your skin and the shape of your chest. In the same consultation, we will talk about the adequate volume of your breasts and their preferences regarding the size of them, and in some cases the placement of a breast implant can be recommended at the same time, in order to increase the volume of your breastfeeding, or in case it would be convenient to reduce its size, impel a reduction procedure. You can also advise a procedure to reduce areolas, if appropriate.

Getting ready for your surgery

Depending on your age and family history, we may ask for a mammogram within the presurgical studies. You will also have specific instructions for presurgical preparation, including a guide to meals, drinks, smoking, taking or not taking certain vitamins and medications. It is very important to note that very smokers patients tend to have less ability to make good scars and a greater predisposition to infections. While making the preparations, make sure that someone accompanies you to your home after surgery, and that you can help for a few days, as well as make the necessary arrangements to avoid social and work commitments during the first days of the postoperative period.

Where will your surgery be done?

The surgery is performed in the Sanatorium, which has all the necessary medical equipment and the greatest comfort for you. You should arrive about 30 minutes before the scheduled time, to make the entry procedures, make a complete medical history, and take preoperative photographs. In your room you can change clothes. After the surgery, you will stay in the clinic for three to four hours, until you make sure everything is in order and you can return to your home, where you will continue to rest.

Types of anesthesia

Breast lift surgery can be performed with local or general anesthesia. We prefer local anesthesia, since it has many advantages with respect to general anesthesia, such as less bleeding, good collaboration on your part, rapid recovery, and much less risk than general anesthesia. With local anesthesia, you will be with a gentle sedation, and your breasts and the area that surrounds you will be asleep, you will be awake and calm throughout the surgery, relaxed and insensitive to pain.

Surgery

Breast lift surgery usually takes between two and three hours, depending on the technique used. Depending on the degree of ptosis, it may range from a periareolar insicion to a vertical periareolo to the one most commonly seen as an anchor.

The areola will be relocated where desired and the excess skin will be removed. Patients with breasts with minimally sagging breasts may be candidates for procedures with more limited inscriptions. During the same surgery, the placement of an implant or restoring the breast excess can be done, in case of a reduction.

After surgery

You may feel a little tired and sore, but you can get up after 24 to 48 hours. The majority of the discomforts can be controlled with the usual analgesic medication that we will prescribe, in addition you must take antibiotics during the seven days following the surgery. After one or two days the bandages will be removed, and you must use a firm and tight gym top, which you must wear for at least three weeks. You may have burning sensations in your nipples, or feel them asleep for a few weeks. This sensation disappears as the swelling goes down. The sutures are usually removed between ten days and fifteen days. The edema on your bust may persist for three to five weeks.

Getting back to normal

Although you may be standing in a day or two, do not plan to return to work until after a week or a little longer, depending on how you feel. You should avoid putting on or taking clothes off your head for a couple of weeks, as we will tell you as little movement of your arms as possible. You should bear in mind that healing is a gradual process, and that little by little you will resume your usual activities, as healing progresses to your natural times. We will give you detailed instructions about the normal activities that you can develop. You should avoid sexual activity for at least a week, and strenuous sports for at least a month. After that, you can restart those activities gradually. If you were to become pregnant, you should not worry, your breasts will fulfill their function normally, since the milk ducts will have remained intact.

Your new look

With this surgery your body will look more harmonious and your clothes will fit better. Just as most swelling and bruising will disappear in the first weeks, it may take six to eight weeks for your breasts to take their final new shape, and then your form may even fluctuate due to hormonal changes, changes in your weight or pregnancies We will do our best to make your scars as unnoticed as possible. But keep in mind that in certain cases extensive scars are inevitable and permanent. They are usually pink and thicker at first, but later, over time, they become less noticeable until they look like a thin white line. You must remember, that all these scars can be covered by the bodice, or by the swimsuit.

Potential risks or complications

Breast lift surgery is not a simple operation, but with proper planning it is very safe. However, as with any other surgery, there is always the possibility of finding surgical complications, common to surgeries in general, or adverse reactions to anesthesia. Bleeding and infection are uncommon, but can cause scars to widen. The percentage of risk decreases, if you carefully follow the pre and postoperative indications that we indicate. Breast lift surgery leaves scars of different sizes depending on the case, permanent scars and sometimes remarkable, although these will be covered by the bodice or swimsuit. Bad scars, and wide scars are more common in women smokers.
